WHAT IS THE NORTHERN DOC FUND?
The Northern Doc Fund is dedicated to discovering and supporting emerging, early-career, working-class filmmakers from the North of England who want to tell original, non-fiction stories.
This fund supports two filmmakers make a short (up to ten minute documentary) and is designed for individuals who need financial and industry support to progress their careers. We prioritise those that have previously struggled to access other funding opportunities.
New for 2026, we have partnered with BAFTA and BIFA qualifying Bolton Film Festival who will welcome five shortlisted filmmakers to pitch for the fund in front of a panel of industry judges on the 1st October 2026. For those new to pitching, guidance will be given to the shortlist.
THE PRIZES
£3,000 cash grant
A non recoupable bursary to help you make your short documentary film.
6 months mentoring
We will pair you with an industry mentor who will support you over 6 months.
Post Production Support
Sticks & Glass are giving you the chance to polish up your film in a professional post production studio.
Cinema Screening
We will host an exciting industry screening of your film at Leigh Film Factory in Greater Manchester.
Mental health support
You have the option to utilise some 1 to 1 mental health support by Film in Mind.
Sheffield DocFest '27 pass
You will get an industry pass to Sheffield DocFest 2027 (Worth £350+)
Guest screenings and more
There will be further opportunities to show your film at film festivals and in cinemas.
